This brief yet densely-packed poem was just awarded the 2015 W.H. Auden Prize for Poetic Expression of Societal Inequity. The prize was accompanied by a generous $30,000 cash award, which will go toward the construction of a new Popwell’s Poetry School and Sock-Puppetry Symposium in Stockton, California. The work was originally published in Rolling Stone magazine’s annual Poetry Edition, and is being presented here at Popwell for the first time.
Malfeasance & Mayonnaise
Injustice! Inequity!
Malfeasance by Another name!
Oh, Corruption!
Bane of my malaise!
Oh, Malaise!
So like the mayonnaise
On a sandwich I don’t care for
So don’t serve it to me, puh-laze.
